Will the capacity of the Otis expand to accommodate more students? Or is it just about spreading and improving spaces?
Alba Cruz-Davis (BPS)
01:23:59
How do we design the space to serve the school community’s needs? What design elements are crucial to providing students with academic excellence and robust learning opportunities?Opportunity for expanded extracurricular activities and partnerships - what would you want to see?
RV
01:24:24
The classrooms are tiny in the Otis. Any chance to combine existing rooms and create more?
Maria Crawford Otis
01:24:35
Would love to see a cafe an auditorium a gym
Jesse Purvis
01:25:58
Will the Paris St site be used for anything else besides Otis expansion?
Andrew Conlin
01:27:24
A new science lab will give our students the opportunity to investigate, create and experiment in a real science classroom! Thank you
amanda bakos

Pre-pandemic the nurse’s office at the Otis was housed in a remodeled supply closet. This year, the Cafeteria had been converted to a nurse’s room. We need a larger nursing space in addition to a large cafeteria.
Elizabeth Tanefis
01:31:48
As the mother of an Otis 4th grader and incoming K1 student, I am so thrilled to hear about this vision for new space that the students and teachers deserve. Larger classrooms, a gym, and specialist space will be wonderful.
Erin DiCarlo
01:32:52
So will this new building be an ADDITIONAL Otis building and it will be split into two campuses?
Melinda Chan
01:35:46
Would love to have spaces for specialist teachers, spaces for resource teachers to work with students with IEPs and who need specialized services, renovated bathrooms for students, an auditorium for drama class and any special events/performances (i.e. 6th grade graduation)
Maria Eugenia Corbo
01:36:17
If the Otis becomes a bigger school in terms of number of students, is any other Eastie school at risk of closing due to declining enrollment overall?
Erin DiCarlo
01:36:41
That's a good question Eugenia!

Would it be possible to design in a way that benefits the community at large since this will be the only modern facility in the neighborhood? Resources that could also be used by the other small schools within walking distance (O'Donnell, Alighieri, PJ Kennedy) would be great to be mindful of, such as performance space or gymnasiums.
Nathan Kuder (BPS)
01:38:29
I wish I was doing this from my office at the Bolling Building.....which is green :)
Betsy Yoshimura
01:39:15
@Matthew Green: I wholeheartedly agree!

This expansion plan is amazing because as a student at the Otis (Francesca), I see the lack of space played out in scenarios everyday. From needing space in classrooms, to needing space for physical education, I think this will really benefit my community.
Maria Eugenia Corbo
01:39:52
@Matthew, agree about building something that the entire community can benefit from.
lisa melara
01:40:13
My recommendation would be to used the old building for sub separate classrooms and to stop busing our East Boston children out of East Boston to schools in Charlestown.

As Family Coordenador the Otis in need to have a big space for parents meeting. Should have a dedicated special for our parents.

Thanks for sharing Jennifer, that’s so wonderful to hear.
Joanna McKeigue Cruz
01:41:29
Paula Goncalves is an amazing principal and mentor! The Otis has very small classrooms and should have the expansion. Agree, it would be nice to have the space used for community- for example basketball leagues, indoor soccer. Family resource space.

01:41:39
I like green (environmental) buildings - just not green as a wall color...
Betsy Yoshimura
01:41:54
Green roof!
Rashaun Martin
01:41:59
I’m thrilled to see the one transition come to fruition with the K-6 and 7-12 model. I was the first to advocate for that when I and my colleagues began the Exam School Initiative back in 2001. It took 20 years but I’m glad we got there and I thank the Superintendent for that.

Good evening! I am the interventionist/resource teacher at Otis. I am so excited about the expansion plan. The proposal includes supporting students with specific needs. Apart from the Design team consulting with the staff at the Otis, wondering what it entails and how the new space would support the students and staff of students with specific needs.

As an Otis School teacher for twenty years, I would like to see all students have the opportunity to learn in a “regular sized” classroom to fit their needs. All students need adequate space to learn. Please consider expanding classroom sizes for the current classrooms that are smaller sized. I appreciate your time and effort. Thank you very much.
